Have you ever noticed that when you are camping you spend a heck of a lot more on groceries than you do if you would have just stayed home? We do, that’s for sure. Another thing is we eat a lot more too. Its not very often I get up and make a big fancy breakfast, but when we go camping we eat breakfast every morning. And not just your regular old pop-tart, but bacon and eggs, breakfast sandwiches, breakfast burritos, you name it and we have done it. For the first time camper, you might stick to the easy stuff, hot dogs and hamburgers, poptarts, etc, but for us seasoned folks we like to come up with creative things to make!
Our family really loves sloppy joes. And you are right, I am sure you are thinking brown up some hamburger and stick in in a crockpot with some Manwich and call it a day. Yea, I suppose I could do that but sometimes, we want something with a little more flavor! So I call this “Sloppy Joes in a Jar!”
This is one of the easiest recipes you will have for camping. Its so easy, you simply mix up your seasoning ahead of time, put it in jars, and have it really for the entire year! And its not just your generic sloppy joe in a jar either, its better! This recipe will make 3 (1/2) Pint Jars, so make one for your self and share the other two with your fellow campers!
What You Will Need:
2 Cups Chili Powder
1/4 Cup Paprika
2-3 Tbsp Dry Ground Mustard
1/2 tbsp. cumin
1/2 tbsp. onion powder
3 tsp garlic powder
4 tsp beef bullion
2 tsp. pepper
You simply mix these seasonings together and store them in an airtight container, such as canning jars. I have purchased the empty seasoning jars you can get at the grocery store and handed them out as gifts!
When you are ready to make your Sloppy Joes, mix 1lb of browned hamburger with 2 tbsp. sloppy joe seasoning and 3/4 cup of ketchup! For each pound of hamburger you are using, mix 2 tbsp. sloppy joe mix.
