If you were at our class yesterday, then you already know how to do everything that I am going to talk about today. But this is for those of you who would like to learn a little bit more about how to decorate our Mason Jar Centerpieces! We sell these adorable centerpieces in store. We of course already have them painted or stained, but you can order one that is not to DIY! (Simply Email Me to learn more!!)
In this tutorial, you will also learn how to care for your succulent plant!
Mason Jar Succulent Plant Tutorial
Materials Needed:
Mason Jar Crate (Can be found at Creative Lush Boutique)
Drawer Pulls or Knob (optional)
Paint color of your choice (I chose a Mint)
3 Succulent Plants of your Choice
Sandpaper
Potting Soil (They do carry a special kind for Succulent Plants, otherwise just mix a bit of sand with it!)
Black River Rock
Instructions
1. The first thing we are going to do is paint our Mason Jar Crate. I only put one coat on, because I was going to sand it down anyway. Let Dry
2. While you are letting your box dry, you are going to plant your succulent plants. To start, you are going to want to put river rock in 1/4 – 1/2 of the jar. Succulent Plants don’t like their roots to soak in water, so this will help the water drain, Especially since its not feasible to put holes in the bottom of your Mason Jars. I used black river rock because then when the soil drains it doesn’t look as dirty!
3. Place potting soil in the rest of the jar. Leave a little room in the top for the dirt/root combination from your Succulent Plants.
4. Place your Succulent Plants in the jar!
5. By now, hopefully your box is dry. If not, go get a glass of wine, or a soda, and RELAX! We now are going to distress our box. I used an electric hand sander because I am pretty comfortable with them and it makes it go a lot faster. However, just a sheet of sandpaper will do! Start at the edges, and move inwards. Take your time and do it lightly, because you can always sand a bit more, but never a bit less!!
6. If you want drawer pulls for your box, you can simply add them at this point! You may need to drill holes in the side to do so, but if you bought pulls that you can just screw on, you just need a screwdriver!
7. Now its time to add the jars and VOILA!! YOU ARE FINISHED!
Succulent Care
The nice thing about succulent plants, is they don’t really require much care. If you know anything about me, you know that I am not a green thumb, at all. I cannot keep a plant alive to save my life. But these babies, easy as pie! Its really super easy to care for them as long as you don’t water them too much (they thrive in drought like conditions) and that you give them sufficient drainage.
Don’t know how often to water? Some say, only water when you notice the leaves start to become indented. Too much water causes their roots to rot. If you are putting them in a pot with no drainage, put river rock on the bottom of the pot to let the water drain into, so the plants do not sit in water.
Enjoy your new centerpiece!
