My husband thinks that I am absolutely crazy, and he is probably right. When you start a home together, it feels like every time a parent or elder family member upgrades something you end up with it. But then sometimes this creates a dilemna in our home.. we end up with a bunch of mis-matched furniture. So this past summer, I made my husband upcycle most of my furniture pieces, and paint them all white. That is where the crazy part comes in… we have four kids, and white furniture is a lot harder to keep clean! But when there is a problem, I can solve it, so VOILA! Antiquing our furniture, or distressing it, brought in that old, aged look that is so trendy right now while if it gets banged up by one of the kids its really no big deal!
You really just need a few things for this project, so lets get started!
- Sander
- White Paint
- A hutch (This one was not that old, and I unfortunately do not have a before picture but imagine the hutches that had the gold etched in the glass and you would have our hutch.
- A Paintbrush or ideally a paint sprayer
Step One:
The first thing you are going to want to do is sand your hutch. this will not only remove some of the previous paint or stain, but will also make your paint stick better.
Step Two:
Using a Paint Sprayer, evenly coat your hutch. make sure to get every crevice. If you need to, use a paint brush to get in places where your paint sprayer will not fit. Let it dry overnight
Step Three:
After letting it dry overnight, lightly sand your hutch again to distress it. Pay special attention to the corners, edges and decorative pieces
Step Four:
You now will want to adhere your hardware. Finding unique hardware can really boost a project. For this hutch, I am saving up wine corks but you could also use marbles, or even search amazon for some fun hardware!
